How to fix "Bootmgr is missing"
Monday, October 27, 2008
Not long ago I faced with a problem at the start of one of my PC. I got this message: "Bootmgr is missing, Press Ctrl + Alt + Del two restart." Well .. For the rest of you who receive this message, it is fortunately easier to fix than you might think.
First, try this solution
Insert your Vista DVD - Restart your computer
- Boot from DVD'n
- Vista asks you about language and keyboard layout
- So you will be prompted to re-install Vista or if you want to repair your existing installation
- Select repair
- You will then see "System Recovery Options"
- Then select the "Startup Repair".
- Vista will try to repair the defect.
If this should fail, there is fortunately a solution No. 2 was the one that worked for me.
Other solution is
- Do numbers 1-7 in the first solution
- Press the "Command Prompt"
- Enter bootrec / rebuildbcd
- Press ENTER
- If this goes well, you are presented with Vista's installation folder.
- Then, type Yes
- But point number 5-6 can also fail. But do not worry, all good things are 3 ;)
The third solution
If you get the message that Bootrec not find a Windows installation, you must do the following
- If you have gone out of the "Command Promt" go back there and enter the following command
- bcdedit / export C: \ BCD_Backup
- ren c: \ boot \ bcd bcd.old
- bootrec / rebuildbcd
- Restart your computer and the problem should be resolved
Hope this helped and good luck.

I need help. I got a brand new and unused pc yesterday, and when I turn it on get it 'Bootmgr is missing'. I have no vista cd. What do I do?
You're the best
If it is new from store, please contact the store you bought it in. If not possible, borrow a cd from someone and follow the instructions above.
I have no vista CD but home burned cd of xp. Do not know completely about my PCN deal with it?
In this case, I have a computer station with 3 gb ram, 3400 + AMD processor atholm plenty of fans, and Nvidia 7800 GS Gainward skermkort.
If there is an xp installation you have had on your PCN you can fix it this way:
-> Start up xp page
-> Go into the Recovery Console using R or E in Norwegian
-> Select partition
-> Then type fixmbr and press Enter
-> Then type fixboot and press Enter
It should do the trick!
Good luck!
Some others who do not get any of these work? How do I get the Command Promt?
The easiest way to fix this problem is to turn off the computer, unplug the power and let it stand for 5 - 10 minutes. Insert the power, turn the power switch and restart the computer .... It is that easy that is to fix this problem. At least for me and on my computer.
The question then is, why is this error message? For me, this happens quite often after my computer has gone to a standstill! I have two physical hard drives, and I have heard that it might have something to do with this ... anyone know?
Welcome! If you have problems with the boot manager it helps rare to just turn off the computer, remove power and wait a few minutes. The reason for this is that if this message comes so often boot your manager corrupt. So then you have to do as written in the article.
Why the error message comes is due to problems with the boot manager that said, for the definition to check out: http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/boot+manager or watch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Boot_Manager
Why is this happening?
Thanks for the help.
Is so far also very interested in knowing why this problem occurs ...
Can be many different reasons why this happens. Often it happens when, for example:
- Insert a new disk
- Installing a new operating system next
- Changes the disk configuration from master to slave
- Other problems with the drive
But if you do not come into the computer, it is hard to start anything.
What we are looking for is the solution to a problem that prevents your computer from starting. When it does not help to be told that we should start your computer ......
If you can not start your computer, it is often something wrong with the power supply or some other hardware failure. This is talking about something else and you will here "start" your computer with the cd!
awesome guide, helped me a lot in the middle of the night when I was fixing a computer for a friend.
Good job :)
Hmm, I got this message on my laptop today.
I have Windows 7 on it, but I have no cd.
I think this was because I was trying to create a new partition on one of the two HDD'ene I have on it.
Help? : (
The quick solution would be to get a windows 7 dvd.
I have just built my PC ready, but when I started it I get 'Bootmgr is missing'. do not know what to do. has no OS installed.

Does no one to be Funke time. : D
Ka I will do when it comes up on the computer "Bootmgr missing, press ctrl + alt + del to restart"? I have windows 7 ...
I believe I have not installed any software yet, but I can not install it because of the "Missing Bootmgr"
I Bootmgr and lacks an overall formatting of the hard disk after a blue screen (some with video drivers)
But have tried all of the windows cds / linux etc to start up again /
Have checked the BIOS and it should be just set up so that it will boot from the dvd / rw room.
What can the problem be? missing drivers for dvd, dvd broken?
And how can I fix this? Possible to install via the memory stick?
had set price ever on aid, has rivd your hair for a week now.
have someone who thinks there may be errors in the bios. Is there a possibility also?
after having tried all three solutions above brings up the same box that says:
"BootRec.exe - corrupt file
The file or directory D: \ Windows.old \ users is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility "
how can I run chkdsk when I can not even boot?
is there anything I can enter in
